New Moms, Don’t Choose Style Over Safety

It’s very easy to get caught up in the Baby Buying Craze. Take a trip to a store like Babies R Us or the Baby Depot at Burlington Coat Factory, and as you walk down aisle after aisle, you may begin to think, “I need it all!” Today’s moms are overwhelmed with the task of deciding what a need is and what a want is. I’m a product of the 80’s, and I know that there were not so many stylish clothes, baby bags, strollers, etc. then. Believe me; the proof is in the pictures. With the variety of options today, you can find any product in a color or design that fits your style. Before you make your chic purchase, you may want to make sure the product is safe for your baby. The stylish slings seen below were recently recalled. The CPSC is aware of three reports of deaths that occurred in these slings in 2009. sling 1 sling2

“On March 12, 2010, CPSC issued a warning about sling carriers for babies. Slings can pose two different types of suffocation hazards to babies. In the first few months of life, babies cannot control their heads because of weak neck muscles. The sling’s fabric can press against an infant’s nose and mouth, blocking the baby’s breathing and rapidly suffocating a baby within a minute or two. Additionally, where a sling keeps the infant in a curled position bending the chin toward the chest, the airways can be restricted, limiting the oxygen supply. The baby will not be able to cry for help and can slowly suffocate.”

The slings have been sold at Wal-mart, Burlington Coat Factory, Target, Babies “R” Us, BJ’s Wholesale, various baby and children’s stores and other retailers nationwide, and on the Web at Amazon.com, for between $25 and $30.
